The Platte County prosecutor has charged a Missouri man for driving drunk and crashing into a Kansas City police officer’s patrol car on Interstate 29.

The incident occurred on October 11, 2025, resulting in serious but non-life-threatening injuries to both the officer and the driver, Roman Shumate. Shumate was found to have a blood-alcohol level of 0.219, nearly three times the legal limit, and was driving with a suspended license.

The crash data indicated that Shumate was traveling at 80-82 mph in a 55-mph zone before the collision.
