Two new Missouri bills aim to eliminate the cost of state-issued IDs. Democrat State Representative Jeff Hales introduced the bills, which would provide Missourians with one free original nondriver’s ID and one free renewal or replacement every two years. The bills note that Missouri currently charges $6 for a non-driver’s ID valid for more than 3 years, or $3 for one valid for 3 years or less. The bills target the claimed financial hurdle to obtaining identification. The Missouri State ID Access Coalition supports the bills, claiming that the current cost is the biggest obstacle for some residents in obtaining IDs.
