Since the implementation of Missouri’s Siddens Bening Hands-Free Law in 2025, thousands of citations and warnings have been issued for violations of the law, which prohibits the use of any devices while driving. The law, signed in August 2023 and effective from Jan. 1st, 2025, carries penalties of up to a $150 fine for a first conviction and up to seven years in prison for fatal crashes. The Missouri State Highway Patrol has issued over 4,000 citations and warnings, with two incidents resulting in fatalities. AAA emphasizes the dangers of distracted driving, with cell phones being a significant distraction leading to numerous injuries and fatalities in 2024. Drivers are advised to stow their phones, secure loose items, and pull over safely if attention is needed elsewhere.
