Missouri Western State University’s Social Work program is partnering with the Community Action Partnership of Greater St. Joseph to host a poverty simulation on Friday, March 27.
The event will run from 9:00 a.m. – noon in the Blum Student Union, Hoff Conference Rooms 218/219.
The simulation is free to the public and invites attendees to role-play as characters navigating life with limited resources. Participants must collaborate with “family members” or work independently to manage the daily financial and logistical hurdles faced by those living below the poverty line.
“Poverty is not a concrete term,” said Jana Frye, assistant professor of social work and BSW field education director. “It may be different for different people, locations, with or without supports. This activity does have a lot of fun or silly moments. But it also brings to light the difficulties that those living in poverty face every day.”
Frye noted that the activity is particularly valuable for students and professionals who work within the community. The event will conclude with a debriefing session to help participants process the experience together.
For professionals maintaining credentials, the Social Work program will provide 2.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) at no cost.
Those interested in attending or seeking more information can contact Frye via email at jfrye3@missouriwestern.edu.
