The University of Saint Mary is now the only U.S. institution offering in-person higher education programs for incarcerated individuals at various correctional facilities. The university recently received approval from the U.S. Department of Education to operate its Prison Education Program at several facilities. Through the Second Chance Pell Initiative, incarcerated students can pursue associate and bachelor’s degrees with courses taught by USM faculty in person. The program aims to support academic achievement, personal development, and successful reentry for students who may be released before completing their degrees.
